Chicken Coop Kits For Quick And Easy Building

It has becoming more and more popular to keep your own chickens, but the cost of buying a readymade coop can be expensive. However, it’s now possible to buy chicken coop kits which, once erected, will serve exactly the same purpose.

Erecting a kit is not a difficult process and can be carried out by the whole family, making it a fun day for all concerned. It’s important though to know exactly what to look for before buying your kit, as once erected it isn’t easily altered.

There are three main types of chicken coop kits that you can purchase right now:

  • Movable Coop Kits - these are smaller kits that are built for only a few chicken or for smaller baby chicken. If you're only starting now with buidling your own chicken coop, this is the chicken coop kit type to get started with
  • Mid-sized Chicken Coops - These are bigger than the movable types and they are perfect if your intention is having many eggs from your chickens. To get the average of 5 eggs per week from a hen, it needs to have a coop that has a large enough running space and a good nesting area.
  • Premium Chicken Coops - These are you regular, big size chicken coops that you are ready to do if you are serious about having many chicken around. The price difference between a mid-sized coop and a premium sized is not that big, so many people skip directly to the premium variety to get the most benefits. You can have at least 10 chicken that will give you 5 eggs a week. Many people actually make lots of money from selling their eggs regularly. You can do it too!

Initially it’s important to decide just how many chickens you intend to keep. The size of the coop will depend upon this, and it’s always a good idea to allow for the fact that you may want to add to your flock at some later date.

A chicken coop needs regularly cleaning and maintenance, so it has to have easy access. The floor of a coop should always be slightly sloping towards the doorway so that hosing down and general cleaning out will make it easier for the water and general waste to be pushed out of the coop.

Plenty of ventilation is essential to keep the coop fresh, free from odours and disease. Windows, preferably sliding windows, will help to keep the coop well ventilated and also let in plenty of light. If you want your chickens to produce eggs throughout the year, light is an essential element.

The windows should also have a thick wire mesh over them to deter predators. Remember that even small predators can chew quite effectively through wire, so it’s important the mesh is thick enough.

Warmth is another essential element, and so the coop should be well insulated. If possible an electric light will help you to be able to see properly during the winter months whilst cleaning, and it can also be a good source of heat.

There are many chicken coop kits available on the market, so it’s best if you have a really good idea of what you’re looking for before you buy. Be sure that the kit you finally choose is well made, sturdy and will accommodate all the things you need. A badly made coop will not last too long and can in the end be a costly enterprise. The chicken run area must be especially sturdy and safe for your chickens and sometimes it’s worth spending just a little extra to ensure you’re getting the best quality.

Good kits will come with step by step instructions on how to carry out the building of the coop, and these should also contain all the extras you’ll need.

Deciding where you want the coop to be is important in that you want it to be in an area where there is plenty of light but sheltered from bad weather conditions during the worst months of the year. There are many things to consider before you purchase your kit, but once you have allowed for all the relevant points your chicken coop kit will serve you well for many years to come.
