Design and appearance

Before you start with the actual work, you need to sketch out your design on paper. What colors do you want your coop be painted it? What about the walls and the roof? Depending on where you live, you might have a chicken coop very visible to your neighbours. In that case, it's really advantageous to have a chicken shed that blends in nicely with its surroundings with a nice design. You don't want the coop to distract or look unattractive, else you have all your neighbourhood on your neck, and you know how bad that can be! Be it in your backyard or your garden, designing an aesthetically looking chicken coop is crucial to have your peace of mind and friendly neighbours around you!

Using good judgement

Think about the materials you need to use based on the coop plans you've got. Once the chicken coop is ready and open for its new owners, it needs to be easy to clean and disinfect. Also what about the doors? They should open inwards, and not outwards. You should also install sliding windows to prevent chicken roosting on them.

Proper ventilation

This is a two-fold issue. Not only you want to have a chicken coop that keeps your chicken locked up and shielded from bad weather, but you also want to have good ventilation installed. Draft free air movement from within your chicken shed is important as chicken need fresh air and oxygen just like the rest of us. A proper ventilation will remove any toxic gases ike ammonia that is built up and will dry out any dampness that might grow inside the coop walls. Of course, it goes without saying that walls insulation is crucial in keeping your chickend ry. Humidity is one thing that really hurts your chicken so you want to avoid that.

Good source of light

For a proper source of light and warmth during the winter months and good ventilation during summer, you need to install windows that face south. This will ensure that your chicken will get direct sunlight the whole day. Also you might want chicken that give you eggs throughout the whole year. In this case you need to look for an electrical source of light, as this will keep your chicken warm through the winter and will help them lay eggs all the time.

Chicken feeders and waterers

Chicken will need to have easy access to water and food. On the other hand, chicken tend to make a mess of their food and drink so you need to place your chicken feeders at the height of your chicken's back. Having this properly done will ensure that the chicken will stretch their nects up to eat so their feet will not touch the food, disallowing scratching it and making a full mess out of it.
